Every feeling that you experience is coming from somewhere…
When we empathically feel, we’re not just supporting and giving, we’re also taking on and receiving.
As we pick up on and internalize the emotions around us, as well as the emotions that come from within us, we are receiving and absorbing those feelings.
This can especially show up when we carry the belief that our role is to support, or that we have to carry the burdens of others. When we experience this core belief, we feel that it is our responsibility to emotionally take on the distress of the person or persons we are supporting.
Because we absorb external emotions so easily, it may become difficult for us to identify which emotions are ours, and which ones are coming from the world around us.
Today, Eric Brumett is diving into our sensitivity to emotions as empathic beings, and how we can allow ourselves to take on less of the outside world.
When we do not know what is ours versus what is somebody else’s, we take ownership of it and then it affects us and we carry it.
We become attached to it because it’s ours now.
